“Birth is the sudden opening of a window, through which you look out upon a stupendous prospect. For what has happened? A miracle. You have exchanged nothing for the possibility of everything.” ~William MacNeile Dixon
To be a part of this “sudden opening” is an exquisite joy and a very real honor. To be called upon for strength and help – even if it’s just to fetch and carry – is a blessing.
Every birth is unique, with its own challenges, its own timetable, and its own needs. My job, as doula, is to help each woman overcome her challenges, accept this timetable, and to meet whatever needs arise during this pregnancy, labor, and birth.
It is a privilege I count among the highest I have been afforded. Being a child of God, wife, and mother are the only privileges I hold a little more dear. 😉
Today, I had the very special honor of being there to help greet a brand new baby girl. She is the first child of a very dear friend of mine, and was born healthy and beautiful to a wonderful couple. They were an amazing birth team, and seeing them bond and work together the way they did was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life!
Birth confounds me. There is nothing more miraculous or special than a child entering the world. To be there is to see what creation looks like.
“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.” ~Barbara Katz Rothman
